Polk County Utilities Division Water Conservation Art Contest

Polk Co., FL-- Polk County Utilities Division announced their 2013 Water Conservation Art Contest for all Polk County students enrolled in both publi,c and private schools, in grades K-12.

Competitors are encouraged to create a poster depicting a water conservation idea.

Rosette ribbons will be awarded for first, second and third place in each of the thirteen grade categories. All others receive participation ribbons. The blue ribbon winner in each category will be featured in the 2013 Water Conservation Calendar.

Bartow High’s FFA wins State Forestry Contest

Bartow, Florida -- Polk County Schools recently announced that Bartow High’s FFA team won the State Forestry Contest. 

The team, consisting of Hunter Westmoreland, Taylor Ross, Rachel Locke, Brett Wasden and Jessica Clark, reportedly placed first in the following categories: general knowledge, dendrology, pest/disorders, compass and pacing. The team also placed third in the tools category. 

In the individual competition, Brett Wasden received a first place ribbon in every category except for compass and pacing.

Lakeland, Florida -- Polk County Commissioners are providing residents resolved to living healthier an early start to their New Year’s resolutions with a hike at Circle B Bar Reserve.

Commissioner George Lindsey will host the New Year’s Day “Here’s to Your Health Hike” at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1 at the 1,267-acre park on SR 540 (Winter Lake Road) in Lakeland.

BARTOW, FL-- Polk County residents can safely dispose of household hazardous waste and electronic equipment for FREE during a collection event hosted by the County’s Waste Resource Management Division and the City of Winter Haven.

The collection will take place from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on December 1 at the Chain O’ Lakes SW Complex, 210 Cypress Gardens Blvd, SW, Winter Haven.

Polk County, FL-- 2012 Circle B Bar Reserve will host Polk’s NatureFest 2012 this Saturday, November 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Organizers have provided all of the event's details below:

Come join us as we celebrate nature. This free event features live native Florida animals that you can see up close, such as the alligator, bald eagle and the Florida panther. There will be hands-on activities, a prescribed fire obstacle course, impressive birding, tree climbing (for ages six-years and older), archery and a whole lot more for you and your family to enjoy.

Bartow, FL--  The Mosquito Control Section of the Parks and Natural Resources Division has intensified inspections and treatment of known mosquito breeding areas, and has scheduled ground and aerial sprayings of the area to control the population.
