Aerial treatments in the Indian Lake Estates area October 15-18. The Mosquito Control Section of the Parks and Natural Resources Division shares some mosquito information, as well as some preventative mesaures you can take:

Mosquitoes are generally most active at dusk and dawn; however the floodwater mosquitoes can bite during daylight hours.  The best protection from mosquito-transmitted diseases is avoiding exposure to infected mosquito bites.

If you must be outside when mosquitoes are active, cover up.  Wear shoes, socks, long pants and long sleeves when outdoors. Apply mosquito repellent to bare skin and clothing.  Always use repellents according to the label.  Repellents with DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon, eucalyptus, and IR3535 are effective.

Keep mosquitoes out of your house.  Repair broken screens on windows, doors, porches, and patios.

Polk County residents experiencing mosquito annoyance should call 534-7377 ext. 237, send an e-mail to skeeter@polk-county.net, or visit the Mosquito Control Website at http://www.polk-county.net.

The treatments are scheduled based upon mosquito trap data.  All treatments are subject to favorable weather.
