Bartow, FL -- Super Summer Shows continue this week at the Bartow Library.

On Wednesday, July 6: Ninth Period, There and Back Again: Around the World in 60 minutes features comedy, magic, music, puppets, and live animals.

The event runs from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Doors open 20 minutes prior to performance.

Winter Haven, FL -- Join the city as it celebrates Winter Haven’s Centennial beginning with an old fashioned community picnic beginning at 4 p.m. Bring your family, chairs or a blanket, and a basket of your favorite picnic food.

From there, be entertained with a nostalgic sing-along by Harmony Grits, and participate in family games including three-legged races, watermelon seed spitting contests and corn-hole toss.

During the evening, two ski shows will be featured on beautiful Lake Silver. An inflatable obstacle course, rock wall and bounce house, a dunk tank, historic displays and food vendors will also be available throughout the evening.

Lakeland, FL -- Come on out tonight to the T.Mims Corp. Red, White & Kaboom Independence Celebration at Lake Mirror.

The event will take place from 6:00 p.m. – 9:15 p.m. with music and a breathtaking fireworks display dazzling the crowd at 9 p.m.

“We are pleased to sponsor Red, White & Kaboom again this year.  It is an excellent opportunity for our community to come together in celebration of our great country and it is free to the public, Tom Mims, president of T. Mims Corporation said. “We will be continuing our Chow for Now canned food drive to benefit Volunteers In Service to the Elderly so we want each spectator to bring at least one can of food for Viste.”

The evening’s main entertainment will include live music from Channel Z Band.

Refreshments will be available for a small charge Saturday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Movie titles are subject to change.

Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Lakeland power plant ranked among worst in NAACP report

Lakeland, FL -- A new national NAACP report identifies five coal-fired power plants in Florida as among the most harmful in the nation for low-income communities and communities of color.

On Friday, June 24, the NAACP will hold a “teach-in” in Tampa to educate community members and urge for the plants to be shut down.

‘Coal Blooded: Putting Profits Before People’ analyzes emissions and demographic factors - – including race, income, and surrounding population – to calculate “environmental justice scores” for the nation’s 431 coal-fired power plants.
