Man wanted in attack of ex-girlfriend's father captured

Winter Haven, Florida -- The Winter Haven Police Department has announced the man wanted in the burglary of his ex-girlfriend's home on June 5, in addition to four other crimes, has been captured.

Police say they got a tip Sunday night Ashir Matai was in the area of Ave. P, NW and 2nd Street NW. When they arrived, Matai fled on foot, jumped a fence and hid behind a home.

OSHA: Caseworker's stabbing death "could have been prevented"

Dade City, Florida -- The U.S. Labor Department's OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, says the death of a young caseworker in Dade City this past December "could have been prevented".

OSHA has cited Integra Health Management, of Owings Mills, Md., with two violations following an incident in December 2012 during which Stephanie Ross was fatally stabbed by a patient in front of his Dade City home.

Trio of shoplifters caught with sticky fingers at Walmart

Winter Haven, Florida -- A trio of "shoppers", all with criminal histories, were arrested Sunday after police say they stole numerous items from a Winter Haven Walmart.

Winter Haven Police say around 8:40 p.m. on June 2, Willie Lawson, Sr., Tomeka Fields and Dina Johnson went into the store in the 7400 block of Cypress Gardens Boulevard and split up to collect their bounty.

2 traffic stops lead to 2 drug trafficking arrests in Polk

Winter Haven, Florida -- Two separate traffic stops over the weekend resulted in arrests for possession and intent to sell methamphetamine, marijuana and spice.

Winter Haven Police say around 10:15 p.m. on June 1, an officer pulled over 18-year-old Robert Whitchard in the 1100 block of 6th St. SW in Winter Haven. 

Woman accused of nursing home ID theft

Bartow, FL -- A traffic stop in Bartow has landed a 23-year-old nursing aide in jail for ID theft.

Polk County deputies had been looking for Portia Charlton when she was pulled over Friday. Jail records show she is charged with 13 counts of stealing identification information from 13 people at a nursing home where she used to work.

Municipal worker arrestd for stealing city property

Bartow, Florida -- The Bartow Police Department has arrested a city employee suspected of dealing in stolen property belonging to the City of Bartow.

During the course of the investigation, police say they discovered James Eugene Downing had conducted six pawn shop transactions involving city computer equipment and software to which he had access.

Investigators say Downing has been employed by the City of Bartow since 2002, and that the thefts occurred during his assignment to the Information Technology section as a PC Technician.
