Officer shoots armed man in Lakeland

Lakeland, Florida -- A police officer shot and wounded a 64-year-old man Monday afternoon in Lakeland, police said.

Sgt. Terri Smith said officers were investigating a report of shots fired when they came upon George W. Dean, 64, of 620 West Patterson Street, and saw he had a firearm.

Officers told him to drop his weapon, but he did not. He pointed his gun at the officers, and Officer Mike Robinson shot several rounds at Dean, Smith said,

Dean was struck once in the torso, and taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. His condition was reported as critical.

Officer Robinson was placed on paid administrative leave pending completion of the shooting investigation, which is standard procedure, Smith said.
