Lakeland, FL -- The Lakeland Police Department says they have been made aware of a mystery shopper scam going on in the area.

The department says these scams are not new, but they do defraud many people out of their money and wants to remind our citizens that, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Detectives say the scam starts by a person being contacted and told they have been selected to be a “Mystery Shopper” for the company. The person then receives an envelope with either money orders or cashier’s checks are instructed to deposit/cash the item at their bank, take a sum of money (which is their payment), purchase an item or two, and then wire the remaining money to a certain location. These money orders/cashier’s checks are fake and when the bank receives them back, the money comes out of your account and there is no recourse.

Don't be a victim of these criminals. Legitimate companies that employ mystery shoppers will not pay you in advance and they will not ask that you forward any money to another location.
