Bartow "blood drinker" sentenced to 20 years

Bartow, FL -- A Bartow man accused of murdering his roommate and drinking the victim's blood has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Mauricio Lopez accepted a plea deal. "No contest" to second-degree murder.

The case sounded like a scene out of a "Twilight" movie but the story out of a Bartow neighborhood was very real.

"He raced from the front and he looked just like the demon was in him. It was a look you would never forget," said Barbara Nichols who was sitting on her porch Aug. 1 last year when her next door neighbor, 32-year-old Macario Cruz was murdered.

Cruz's girlfriend Mariella Mendez ran to Nichols for help. "She was drenched in blood and she said, 'Call 911!'"

Bartow police say Mauricio Lopez had stabbed his roommate Cruz to death over Cruz's relationship with Mendez.

But it is what the accused killer did next that baffled Detective David Wyant. "He was coming out of the house, had a knife in one hand and a cup of blood in the other and he took a drink, held it up in the air and said, 'This is my secret'," Wyant said.

Lopez was on the run for three days, police say he was arrested when he was spotted hitch-hiking.
