Memorial Weekend DUI enforcement initiative

Polk County, Florida-- With the approach of the long Memorial Day weekend honoring those that have served in our armed forces, there will be much celebrating across our nation. Parties to start our summer, graduation festivities, and cook outs with loved ones are some of the many celebrations taking place. Polk County Sheriff’s Deputies will be on alert to help prevent tragedy on our roads from drunk drivers over this holiday.

“Drunk or impaired driving is a serious crime that will be aggressively enforced this holiday weekend”, says Sheriff Grady Judd. “Don’t let an enjoyable weekend celebration turn into a tragedy by drinking and driving.”

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reports that drinking and driving continues to be a major problem on our highways — killing almost 10,000 people a year. In Florida alone, 36 percent of the 2,398 fatal crashes in 2012 were determined to be alcohol related.

“If alcohol is part of your festivities, make sure you designate a sober driver to get you home safely, or contact a local sober ride program such as AAA Tow To Go at (855) 2-TOW-2-GO or (855) 286-9246,” said Sheriff Judd.

Sheriff Judd recommends the following easy steps to have a safe and Memorial Day weekend:
