Lakeland, Florida-- Polk County Sheriff’s deputies issued a warrant for the arrest of 54-year-old Oliver “Dan” Durfey, from Kissimmee, Florida for embezzling over $56,000 over a 26 month period, deputies reported yesterday.

Durfey faces charges of Scheming to Defraud, Grand Theft , and Illegal Use of a Credit Card.

According to the affidavit , Durfey, who was employed as the church administrator for the First Baptist Church of Poinciana, used the church’s two checking accounts and one savings account from April 2010 to June 2012 for his own personal use.

Durfey’s residence is located in Osceola County, but the church is located in Polk County.

Durfey obtained a debit card for the account without the church’s knowledge or permission and used it over the 26-month time frame, deputies said in the release about the incident.

Bank records indicate that Durfey has stolen over $56,000 from the church using the debit card for transactions and withdrawals.

Detectives also learned during this investigation that Durfey is running for Clerk of Courts in Osceola County.  Elections for that office will be held on August 14, 2012.

Durfey used church funds to pay for two booths at political venues for his campaign.  Durfey’s on-line Campaign Treasurer’s Report (4/1/2012 – 7/6/2012) shows two $5,000 “loans” from Dan Durfey dated 4/2/2012 and 6/1/2012, deputies said.

Investigation revealed that Durfey withdrew $5,000 from church’s checking account on 4/2/2012 and withdrew $9,000 from the church’s savings account on 5/31/2012.

PCSO is asking the public's help in providing the location or any information that will help locate Durfey. The attached photo is from Durfey’s website.
