Nonprofit Organizations Awarded Grants

Bartow, Florida -- Six Polk County nonprofit organizations are receiving nearly $560,000 in grant funding awarded by the Polk County Board of County Commissioners.

The grants come from two programs offered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). 

This year six agencies receive Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) for public service activities for underserved individuals and families throughout Polk County. In accordance with federal program guidelines, these funds must be used to primarily benefit low and moderate income families.

The prestigious designation is given in recognition to school districts from around the country that demonstrate an unwavering commitment to providing top-quality music education for all students, particularly districts that have demonstrated exceptional efforts toward maintaining music education as part of the core curriculum provided in schools.

On Saturday, the "Reelin-In-Relay Bass Tournament" will take place.

1st, 2nd & 3rd Place Winners will receive prizes, and there are door prizes being given as well.

The fundraising event, taking place on march 23rd, benefits Bartow's Relay for Life.

The event takes place at Camp Mack.

'Cops on Doughnut Shops' Fundraiser for Special Olympics

Lakeland, Florida-- On March 21, 22 and 23, 2013 from 6 a.m. – 10 a.m., officers from the Lakeland Police Department and other Polk County law enforcement agencies will be on top of the Krispy Kreme to raise funds for Special Olympics.

Lakeland Police say this event is in conjunction with the same event being held in Tampa, and even in other states across the country.

Festival for children's literacy coming up

Festival for children's literacy coming up

Lakeland, Florida -- Lakeland High’s Leadership Cadre will host its annual Naughty Children’s Reading Festival at Lake Bonny Park.

On Friday, April 5 at 800 U.S. 98 South in Lakeland, approximately 600 second graders are expected to show up for the event aimed at promoting literacy among students. The event is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.

Lake Wales, FL – READ Polk will offer a free training workshop to volunteers who would like to teach adults how to read on Saturday, April 20, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Polk State College J.D. Alexander Center, 152 E. Central Avenue, Lake Wales, FL.

A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. No experience is necessary. Volunteers will receive the training and materials to become certified tutors. Class size is limited.
