Winter Haven, FL -- Each Friday in April, Polk County Fire Rescue will take to the streets to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) through their signature fundraiser, the "Fill the Boot" drive.  

For more than half a century, members of the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) have stood by the MDA, striving to make a difference in the lives of those affected by neuromuscular diseases.

Polk County high school student wins prestigious tobacco youth advocate award

Polk County, FL -- The Tobacco Free Partnership of Polk County recognizes Jordan Bontrager, a Polk County high school student and Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) youth advocate, for winning the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids Southern Region Youth Advocate of the Year Award.

The Youth Advocates of the Year Awards honor young activists throughout the country who fight to protect their peers from the dangers of tobacco use through public education efforts, student-to-student training and outreach.

Bartow, FL - Motorcycle riders will tour scenic Polk County during Parks & Recreation's 5th Annual "Ride for a Reason" Poker Run on April 2.


Parks and Rec officials say all proceeds will benefit the Sunshine Foundation, a wish-granting organization based in Davenport.


Registration and check-in begins at 10:00 a.m. and riders will depart from the Sunshine Foundation Dream Village, located at 5400 County Road 547 North in Davenport.

Celebrate centennial - plant a tabebuia tree!

WINTER HAVEN, Florida - The yellow tabebuia tree has been chosen as the Centennial Tree for the City of Winter Haven.

One hundred of the spectacularly blooming trees will be planted throughout the City on public property.  Twenty-seven planting sites have been designated around the City.

School and community groups and volunteers are invited to participate in the tree plantings. The tabebuia trees will be planted beginning March 16 and continue through April 16, or until all trees are planted.

Bartow, Florida -- The Polk Sheriff’s Charities, Inc. "Bustin’ Clays with Sheriff Grady Judd" event will be held tomorrow, March 5, 2011 at the Tenoroc Sporting Clays (3755 Tenoroc Mine Rd). 

Registration for the 50 Bird Fun Shoot begins at 7:00 a.m., and the Shotgun Start takes place at 8:30 a.m. Lunch, ammo, and gift bags are included with all registrations. You can register online here.

The public is invited to join the Sheriff Office at this charity event, when all proceeds raised will be used to help build the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Memorial.
