Griffin Elementary, North Lakeland Kiwanis partner on book drive

Lakeland’s Griffin Elementary and the North Lakeland Kiwanis Club partnered on a book drive providing books to summer and afterschool programs in Polk. 

Griffin parents, students and staff collected more than 1,200 books that were donated to the YMCA’s afterschool and summer Kid Care programs, programs at Lakeland’s Cambridge Cove Apartments, the Boys and Girls Club and other local programs.  

Griffin and the North Lakeland Kiwanis have a close relationship and partnership.  The Griffin students are part of the national Kiwanis initiative, the K-Kids.  K-Kids is a student-led service organization and sponsored by a Kiwanis club.

Lakeland, FL -- Florida STEP UP for TS! Is a family-friendly community educational event to raise donations for TSA (Tourette Syndrome Association National) & TSA-FL Youth Ambassadorship but awareness of Tourette Syndrome in our community.  

Rothman Center doctors will attend to answer any specific questions relating to Tourette Syndrome & treatments.

R. Bruce Wagner's "Rainbow of Hope" project benefits MDA

Students and staff at Lakeland’s R. Bruce Wagner Elementary raised $1,500 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) during the school’s 3rd Annual “Rainbow of Hope” Day. 

The event is part of a school-wide charity donation effort.

Students and staff made donations of a $1 and received a green shamrock or donated $5  to receive a gold shamrock.  Donors could print their names on the shamrocks and the shamrocks were used to decorate cafeteria walls.  Donors also received T-shirts.

The proceeds benefited local families with muscular dystrophy. This will assist with doctor appointments, wheelchair purchases and summer camps for children.

Lakeland, Florida -- If you don't have dental insurance and have some free time today, Village Plaza Dental Designs is offering free dental services until 1 p.m. today.

Dr. Eric Ebuen says they will be doing cleanings, fillings and extractions throughout the morning.

He and his staff expect to assist at least 250 people by the end of the event.

Bartow, FL -- The Bartow Chamber of Commerce has announced a basketball game between the 2010 5A State Champion basketball team members and the current Bartow High School (BHS) boys basketball team will be played at Carver Recreation Center on Thursday, May 26 at 6 p.m.

"This will be an exciting match," Carver Recreation Center Director, Larry Tucker, said. "Some of the Championship team players from last year are home now from college for a short time, so we got them to agree to play and hopefully raise some money for the current team's uniforms."

Three Polk Seniors named "Outstanding Volunteers" in Teen Trendsetters Program

Three graduating seniors from Polk high schools have been named Outstanding Volunteers in Volunteer USA’s Teen Trendsetters Reading Mentors program.

Chosen for this honor were Roxana Aguilar of Winter Haven’s Chain of Lakes High, Audra Jordan of Lakeland High and Jasmine McKnight of Bartow High.

Volunteer USA’s Teen Trendsetters reading mentors program has 45 high school students at 4 Polk high schools tutoring 60 at-risk second and 3rd graders in reading. Frostproof Senior is the fourth Polk high school to have the program in addition to Bartow, Chain of Lakes and Lakeland.

Winter Haven wants award for city spirit

Winter Haven, Florida - The City Of Winter Haven wants to win state awards for their City Spirit, Citizenship and Environmental Stewardship.

The city has submitted applications to the Florida League of Cities for the Florida Municipal Achievement Awards Program.

The intern program in the City's Technology Services Department will be submitted for the Florida City Spirit Award.  The program is for technology-oriented students and offers a dynamic, engaging, environment for students to learn about technology, develop and hone business skills and to understand the value of community service.

For nearly 30 years, the Winter Haven Public Library has been accepting eager members of the community to participate in its volunteer program. That program will be considered for the Florida Citizenship Award. The program, started as a resource to help alleviate Library staff workload, has evolved into one that nurtures participants to develop a deep-rooted understanding of community and has resulted in an active army of future community leaders.
