Lake Wales Police asking for donations

Lake Wales, Florida - The Lake Wales Police Department's Volunteer Observers Impacting Community Effort, called "VOICE" is in need of financial help.

VOICE is an organization focused on helping the community. The organization helps with parades, funerals, citizen patrol throughout the city, and large public attended events.

Lakes Wales Police Sergeant Tim Harrell says VOICE members are the eyes and ears of the community.

VOICE is looking for financial assistance from the community of Lake Wales. Donations will be used to paint and replace the decals on the two VOICE cars. The estimated costs to refurbish the exteriors of the cars are nearly $1,000 each for the 1996 Taurus Sedans.

Wing Fling Tour to benefit Humane Society of Polk Co.

Winter Haven, FL -- Today & Tonight Magazine will host the First Annual Wing Fling Tour 2011 Saturday, Sept. 24.

The Wing Fling Tour will fly around Polk County in luxury coach buses so that participants can sample some of the best chicken wings in town in a charity event to benefit The Humane Society of Polk County.

Eight locations have pulled together to help raise money for the Humane Society of Polk County through food & fun. The tour is $35 per person with registration 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. at the Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce on their breezeway, 401 Avenue B, NW, Winter Haven and the tour runs from 10:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.  All seats must be reserved in advance at www.DontBeChicken.net.

After the bus tours have completed their way around the county, an After Party hosted by Tanner's Pub in downtown Winter Haven will take place on their outside patio from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with live music from AcousticDose, raffle give-a-ways and more.

Polk County RSVP is looking for volunteers ages 55 and older to become Tale Tellers.

Tale Tellers help improve lifetime literacy skills by reading to kindergarteners. Local students enjoy hearing Tale Tellers’ stories and Polk County Schools will ensure volunteers are equipped with the necessary skills to be successful readers.

RSVP Tale Teller training will be held 9 – 10:30 a.m. in the Palmetto Room at the Jim Miles Professional Development Center, 5204 US Highway 98 South in Lakeland.

The actual race starts at 10 a.m.

Polk Co. teens to help boost reading proficiency of youngsters

Polk County, FL -- High schools in Polk County are preparing to open new volunteer mentor programs which inspire students to become better readers and outstanding youth role models. 

The recruitment of teen mentors for three new Teen Trendsetters™ Reading Mentors programs at Bartow International Baccalaureate, Ridge Community, Winter Haven High School coincides with International Literacy Day – an annual Sept. 8 observance to focus attention on the importance of literacy.   

Approximately 50 local students will join thousands of others across Florida who will be trained to mentor 2nd and 3rd graders whose reading levels are, on average, six to nine months behind their peers.
