Annual Dr. Scissorhands Pumpkin Carving Exhibition

Lakeland, FL - Local doctors are carving pumpkins for charity Saturday at the Lakeland Downtown Farmers Curb Market.

Carving begins at 9:30 a.m. Kids' crafts all morning, costume contest at 10:45 a.m., auction begins at 11 a.m.

Proceeds benefit Alliance for Independence. Sponsored by Lakeland Downtown Development Authority and Hall Communications.

The Market is open 8-2. Peace River Center on hand with great information and free stuff.

Carlton Palmore Elem. partners up for Family Library Night

On Oct. 11, Carlton Palmore Elementary held a Family Library Night. During the event, the school partnered with Volunteers in Service to the Elderly (VISTE) to create craft projects for distribution to seniors during Thanksgiving, along with canned goods from their annual drive.

Students and their families gathered to create a total of 50 colorful placemats adorned with pilgrims, Indians, turkeys, pumpkins and leaves. A variety of creative, paper turkeys were also made by the students using their handprints.

Winter Haven, Florida - Don't miss the Relay For Life Kick Off Celebration in Polk County on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m.!

The event is open to all ages and will be held at the Polk State College Student Center. Attendees will share information regarding starting a team, becoming a sponsor or volunteering for the April 27-28, 2012 Relay For Life event.

Celebrate Polk County historical music in Bartow

Bartow, FL -- On Monday night, Oct. 17, the public is invited to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Polk County at the Bartow Civic Center with music from the early days of Florida.

Organizers say the event will feature tenor soloist Christopher Kline, with guest appearances by children's choirs, local story-tellers, folk musicians, and dancing.

The program is designed to offer a taste of Polk's rich cultural history, from folksong to gospel to music of recent times.

Scott Lake Elementary takes part in “Walk To School Day”

Lakeland, FL -- Last week, more than 400 Scott Lake Elementary students and their families took part in the “Walk To School Day” to emphasize the importance of walking to school safely. 

Students and their families began the walk at Magnify Credit Union’s South Lakeland Branch parking lot.  The students and parents were joined by the George Jenkins High School Band and Magnify’s Eco-Friends, who performed music and dances before the event began.
