Polk County, FL -- Disaster relief volunteers from Polk County were busy over the last three days battling a series of unrelated fires throughout the county.

In just 72 hours, American Red Cross Polk and Highlands County Chapter volunteers helped 16 people after five fires broke out, the majority of which occurring in mobile homes in separate communities.

According to Red Cross, the first fire started on Labor Day in a mobile home on S. Combee Road in Lakeland. The family received lodging for several nights and rental assistance to find a new place to live.

The next day, another mobile home fire broke out on Parrot Road in Auburndale.  The Red Cross helped three adults find a safe place to sleep for three nights. Volunteers also coordinated rental assistance and gave each client comfort kits with basic necessities like soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

The same day, an accidental fire on Deen Still Road in Polk City affected three adults and two infants. The family received lodging and comfort kits as well as financial assistance for a new rental property.

Wednesday turned out to be just as busy with two additional fires. One on Reynolds Road in Lakeland and another on Washington Palm Loop in Davenport. Both cases involved children. The families were put up in nearby lodging and given comfort kits and rental assistance. While the fires were unrelated they did cause damage to the electrical systems of each home which forced the power to be shut off.

“I’m glad I was able to respond and give each family the tools they needed to begin the recovery process,” volunteer Rick Shaw said in a release.  “I don’t know what some of the clients would have done if the Red Cross wasn’t there to help them.”

The American Red Cross responds to more fires than any other type of disaster. For fire prevention information and safety tips go to www.midfloridaredcross.org
