Polk County, FL -- Polk Public Schools is seeking the public’s assistance in a program to help approximately 90 graduating seniors meeting the federal government’s definition of homeless.

The  “Adopt-A-Senior” program is seeking new, donated hygiene and toiletry items to give to these students as graduation gifts.

Although this started out primarily as an in-house school district project, the project has branched out and currently includes churches, professional groups and organizations, clubs and service organizations.

Monetary donations are also being accepted in this program. These homeless seniors have overcome substantial obstacles to graduate high school.

The school district hopes to conclude the project by April 28.

A recent Education Week article outlined the increase of homeless students in school districts across the country.

Nearly 2,300 students in the Polk Public Schools meet the federal definition of homeless representing more than 2 percent of Polk’s total student population.
