Polk County, Florida -- Accustomed to dealing with smoke and flames while on duty, last February Polk County Fire Rescue firefighters fought a different kind of fire when they participated in the second annual “Flaming Moose” Amateur Backyard Cook Off.

Held at the South Lakeland/Mulberry Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 2295, the ‘Polk County Fire Rescue Firewalkers 480’ team, which consists of career and volunteer firefighters, took first place in the rib competition and second place in the chicken cook off.

On March 26, the Moose Lodge presented Team Firewalkers with 12 dozen “Tommy the Moose” stuffed animals that were purchased with funds raised from the cook off. Firefighters keep the cuddly moose on their trucks to help comfort small children during times of distress.

Team Firewalkers 480 consists of PCFR’s Lt. Alan Edwards, engineer Eric Adams, firefighter Nick Esposito, volunteer Fire Chief Terry Perkins and volunteer firefighter Pete Benton. Fire wives Cheryl Edwards, Brittany Adams and Kelly Esposito assisted the team. These firefighters proudly serve at PCFR Station 480, located at 2523 Ewell Road in the Medulla community.

Team Firewalkers 480 accepted the challenge to defend their title at next year’s competition.
