See a firefighter? Fill his boot

Winter Haven, FL -- Each Friday in April, Polk County Fire Rescue will take to the streets to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) through their signature fundraiser, the "Fill the Boot" drive.

For more than half a century, members of the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) have stood by the MDA, striving to make a difference in the lives of those affected by neuromuscular diseases.

The IAFF is MDA's single largest sponsor; all across the country firefighters participate in the "Fill the Boot" drive, including the men and women of Polk County Fire Rescue.

The money raised in Polk County stays in Polk County to help fund program services, including free clinic visits; assistance with the purchase and repairs of wheelchairs, leg braces and communication devices; physical, occupational, and respiratory therapy consultations; support groups and summer camp for children.

The money raised also helps fund several ongoing research projects in search of better treatments and cures.

Throughout this community-wide effort Polk County firefighters will be asking drivers to help "Fill the Boot" on each Friday during the month of April at the following intersections:

  • Old 37 and Main Street
  • Hwy 27 and Alturas Babson Park Cutoff Road
  • Hwy 92 and Combee Road
  • Cypress Gardens Blvd and Cypress Gardens Road
  • Hwy 98 And Clubhouse Road
  • Hwy 60 and Buckmoore Road
