Lakeland, FL -- Three Lakeland High students receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

According to Polk County Schools, Shakondra Brown, Jaylese Driver and Kevin Miller were three of 137 students honored from five Florida schools including Lakeland High. Other schools with students receiving the award were from Kissimmee, Miami, Panama City and Orlando.
Brown, Driver and Miller are students of Lakeland High teacher Justin Troller who leads Lakeland High’s Learn and Serve curriculum. Learn and Service combines an academic component with community service and leadership.

The award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation on behalf of the President of the United States.

The three Lakeland High students were recognized for this honor at the Florida Learn & Serve Conference held in Orlando. Event officials presented them with letters of appreciation from President Obama.

The following are summaries of the community service work of Lakeland High’s three President’s Volunteer Service Award winners.

Shakondra Brown, senior, Lakeland High

Shakondra volunteered with the Police Athletic League (PAL), neighborhood clean-ups, painting houses in her neighborhood and helping youngsters with homework. She is also president of PAL Young Director’s Conference. She received the bronze level award in the program for amassing 133 volunteer hours over a 12-month period.

Jaylese Driver, senior, Lakeland High

Jaylese has volunteered at the Watson Clinic in the MRI, cardiology and urology departments. Many of her duties included assisting elderly patients in addition to handling clerical duties. Her experiences volunteering at Watson Clinic have inspired her to pursue a career in medicine. Jaylese received the silver level award for volunteering 247 hours over a 12-month period.

Kevin Miller, junior, Lakeland High

An accomplished wrestler, Kevin has used his abilities and talents to teach and train youngsters in the sport. He spends summers teaching young wrestlers the skills and discipline necessary to excel. He spends many weekends coaching at wrestling tourneys. He achieved the gold level award for volunteering 272 hours over a 12-month period.
