Polk County, Florida-- The NAMM Foundation recently named the Polk County School District among the Best Communities for Music Education. The prestigious designation is given in recognition to school districts from around the country that demonstrate an unwavering commitment to providing top-quality music education for all students, particularly districts that have demonstrated exceptional efforts toward maintaining music education as part of the core curriculum provided in schools.

In order to choose the districts honored, the organization distributed surveys that brought in a combined response from 2000 schools and districts nationwide. The Best Communities for Music Education survey measured a variety of factors, including budgetary commitment to music, opportunities to learn music, the presence of highly qualified and certified music teachers, adherence to state and national standards, types of musical experiences offered and opportunities for performance and competition.

The distinction underscores the important role music education plays in the educational, emotional and social development of a child. Research shows that skills gained through sequential music instruction, including discipline and the ability to analyze, solve problems, communicate and work cooperatively, are vital for success in the 21st century workplace. Students indicate that arts participation motivates them to stay in school, and that arts create a supportive environment that promotes constructive acceptance of criticism and one in which it is safe to take risks.

Polk County Public Schools’ Senior Coordinator for Music Beth Cummings echoes the importance of music education. “I am proud the Polk County School District has been recognized for the dedication of our School Board to the arts, phenomenal leaders, along with the teachers and parents who care enough to work towards ensuring music is part of the complete education of a child. Music crosses cultural boundaries and language barriers allowing students to find commonality where there may not be an obvious similarity. While developing their musical abilities students also learn important skill sets that will help them in the future, such as discipline, teamwork, problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills.”

The NAMM Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing active participation in music making by supporting research, philanthropic efforts and public service programs that cultivate musical talents.
