Lakeland, Florida -- Lakeland High’s Leadership Cadre will host its annual Naughty Children’s Reading Festival at Lake Bonny Park.

On Friday, April 5 at 800 U.S. 98 South in Lakeland, approximately 600 second graders are expected to show up for the event aimed at promoting literacy among students. The event is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.

Literacy related games and activities will center on this year’s theme: “Books Ahoy!” Students from Blake Academy, Carlton Palmore Elementary, Cleveland Court Elementary, Dixieland Elementary, Philip O’Brien Elementary and Southwest Elementary will join the 200 members of Lakeland High’s Leadership Cadre, teachers and chaperones for the festivities.

Leadership Cadre Faculty Advisor Justin Troller says, “It’s a win-win situation for the younger students and the teenagers. It’s an opportunity for leadership students to become mentors and it’s a chance for second-graders to learn critical reading and writing skills while having fun doing it. It’s the perfect mix of hard work and sheer fun.”

Lakeland High’s Leadership Cadre is a select group of students who have been trained to take on leadership roles at their school and within their community. Special focus is given to developing individual leadership skills such as team-building, decision-making, relationship-building and communication.
