Lakeland, Florida -- Polk County Schools recently gave a shoutout to the students of Highlands Grove Elementary students who helped raise funds for local children with life-threatening illnesses -- and surpassed their goal!

The students, who worked with the Make-a-Wish Foundation and Macy’s, wrote letters to Santa or essays beginning with “I Believe.” Each letter was worth $1 to the Foundation through a partnership with Macy’s. The amount was then doubled by Macy’s because the letters were delivered by Friday, Dec. 14.

The initial goal was set at 500 letters to raise $1,000. The students surpassed that goal and the letters kept on coming!

Highlands Grove students Gabriel Loofe and Michael Ross delivered the letters to Macy’s on Friday. When all the letters were tallied, there was a grand total of 1,102 letters and the school had raised $2,204 for Make-a-Wish.

The Tampa-based Make-a-Wish Foundation’s Central Florida goal is to help 85 children in the Tampa Bay area this year.
