Polk County, Florida -- Residents throughout Polk County came together to provide a special holiday celebration for local children and families at the 2012 Healthy Families Polk holiday dinner.

Nearly 300 volunteers contributed approximately $25,000 of service, which represents over 1,000 hours. The event also received in-kind material contributions of $3,100 and $400 in cash. The overall contributions totaled nearly $28,000.

Every December, Healthy Families Polk puts on a holiday celebration for more than 340 participating families. For many, this is one of the few times during the year they are able to gather with their loved ones for a family dinner. The party is accomplished solely through volunteer efforts, as there is no budget allocation for the event.

Healthy Families Polk is a voluntary home visitation program that promotes and enhances family strengthening skills and practices. The program creates opportunities for positive childhood outcomes through the introduction of helpful parenting techniques and behaviors, which lead to healthy physical, emotional and educational child development.
