Thanksgiving Food Drive to begin soon

Polk County, Florida-- The Polk County Board of County Commissioners is gearing up for their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.

The annual drive has donated more than 51 tons of food to families in need over the past 19 years, or at least that is the best estimate provided by this year's food drive coordinator, Mike Bingham of Polk County Social Services.

Food drive collection boxes will be placed in the Social Services department around the end of October, and will remain there until pick up on November 15.

Wilma Daniels, Health and Social Services Program Manager, says this year they are anticipating more food box requests than ever before.  “It’s no secret that the economy is still down and we expect there will be a needy family waiting for every food box we can fill,” says Daniels in a release about the drive.

The drive provided 108 families with enough food for Thanksgiving dinner, and two or three days of leftovers last year. This year, the county hopes to raise the number of recipient families to 125.

In order to meet their goal, they reach out to businesses and organizations throughout the community. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for example, has committed food from its Bishop’s Storehouse in Plant City, and other churches and businesses have also pledged to donate commodities or cash- used for the purchase of grocery store gift cards, explains the release.

The county employees' drive is not for members of the public. "If someone came to a county office with a bag of food, we certainly wouldn't turn them away, but it is mainly for county employees to make contributions," explains Bingham.

However, if you are interested in getting involved, there is a way to make a contribution to the drive.  Local businesses, such as Spath Jewelers, host their own drives as a part of the overall county employee drive.

"Spath Jewelers' drive is a big deal in Bartow," says Bingham. "People know they can donate their food in exchange for diamond points at the store."
