The Lakeland Fire Department wants to remind drivers that schools are back in session, and school zone speed limits are important.

They provided some statistics and an explanation of the campaign in a release:

"The Lakeland Fire Department’s goal is to promote safe driving so there are no children struck by motorists while they are walking to or from school.

In 2010, there were 29 pedestrians hit by motorists in the City of Lakeland and 16 pedestrians hit in 2011.  In 2012, there have only been 7 so far!  We are seeing a steady decrease in these numbers since we began this campaign!"

So,on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., and again from 2:15 p.m. - 3:15 p.m., be prepared for a friendly reminder from the Lakeland Fire Department!

McKeel Elementary Academy and South McKeel Elementary Academy will have firefighters present on Thursday and Friday from 8:15 a.m. - 9 a.m., and again from 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
