Lakeland to hold groundbreaking ceremony for Purple Heart Memorial | Community Spirit
Lakeland, Florida -- In a spirit of collaboration, the City of Lakeland has scheduled a Groundbreaking Ceremony announcing construction of its new Purple Heart memorial as part of Polk County becoming one of the country’s first Purple Heart Counties.
“We are very excited about the collaboration between Lakeland and Polk County to show support for the Purple Heart veterans in central Florida,” said Mike Mason. “This memorial will forever tell the story of these brave veterans’ sacrifice for future generations.”
The ceremony, which is open to the public, will take place on Aug. 11 at 10 a.m. at the site in Veterans Memorial Park in Lakeland where the memorial will be built.
It will begin with over 30 Purple Heart recipients pulling up to Veterans Memorial Park in the county’s new Purple Heart County bus and filing into the ceremony. Speakers will include BoCC chairperson Sam Johnson, City Commissioner Don Selvage, Polk County Veterans Services supervisor Mike Mason, CWO Greg Robinson and Gary Clark.
In an effort to share the many stories of valor and sacrifice made by Purple Heart recipients in central Florida, the Polk County Board of County Commissioners is asking the county’s many Purple Heart recipients to tell their stories.
To share their story, Purple Heart recipients or the family members of recipients should log onto polk-county.net and click on the “Click Here To Share Your Story” link midway down the page. Stories will be shared online and at special celebrations scheduled around Polk County on Aug. 11.
Four days prior to the ceremony, the Polk County BoCC will read its proclamation making the county an official Purple Heart County at their bi-weekly public meeting in the Neil Combee Administration Building at 330 West Church St. in Bartow, Fla. on Aug. 7 at 9 a.m., which is also Florida’s Purple Heart Day.
To celebrate the occasion, several of the county’s cities, townships and veterans’ organizations will be holding special appreciation events on Saturday, Aug. 11, including: Purple Heart Dinner (Free for all Purple Heart recipients), at 4:30 p.m. American Legion Post 8, 300 Ave M NW, Winter Haven (RSVP 863-293-7029), and VFW Post 2420 Purple Heart Brunch, Aug. 11 at 9 a.m. ($6 for guests) at 200 W. Central Ave. Lake Wales.
Special Purple Heart County flags supplied by the Military Order of Purple Heart will also be flown throughout the county as a show of support for this momentous occasion.
