Program helps 5th graders develop financial literacy

More than 80 Polk County Public Schools 5th grade teachers participated in a professional development program to assist their students in learning about financial literacy.

“trueWealth”  is the title of a financial literacy program provided through school district partner Magnify Credit Union.

Magnify provided the teachers with learning materials and a carry bag in their program sponsorship.  More than 1,400 5th grade students learned more about making good financial decisions now and in the future through the program.

Magnify representative Deeana Keeling explained the credit union’s interest in sponsoring the program.

“trueWealth encompasses more than just financial wealth,  it nurtures the importance of being happy and fulfilled with one's life regardless of the path they choose,” Deeana said.

She said the program teaches students about making better choices and wiser decisions and centers on the components of KIDS—Keep, Invest, Donate and Spend.

“The aspiration of the trueWealth is to develop character with competence, attributes that can be a major solution to our nations’ financial struggles!”

Sherry Moser, Polk Public Schools senior coordinator in elementary education, said teachers declared the program a success with their students.  She said teachers described the program as thoroughly enjoyable, beneficial, engaging and impactful to students.

Teachers completing the program were entered into a raffle for $25 gift cards, also donated by Magnify Credit Union.

The elementary education department also appreciated the support of The Financial Literacy Group’s Rob Sansome in addition to Magnify Credit Union for their assistance in this program.
