Polk County, Florida-- As part of its economic development restructuring process, the Board of County Commissioners and the Central Florida Development Council, Inc. (CFDC) have announced a name change that better fits expanding services offered to Polk County’s small business community.

The Polk County Board of County Commissioners has endorsed changes in the business model for the new Polk County Small Business Assistance Center (SBAC). The SBAC will operate on an annual budget of $209,000 funded from the county’s Occupational License fees. Under the previous model, the organization was also funded through a federal small business development grant; however, the new plan allows the program to rebrand and operate as a county-run agency. It will continue to affiliate with the CFDC.

SBAC provides professional and confidential consultation to start up business owners as well as existing businesses that want to grow but need help focusing on financing and marketing strategies. In addition to one-on-one consultation, SBAC staff conducts workshops held throughout the county.

“We are looking forward to continuing our outreach through Polk County cities, chambers of commerce and our colleges and universities,” said Mary Jane Stanley, Interim Director for CFDC. “With consumer confidence up and retail sales increasing, the business climate in Polk County continues to improve. The Small Business Assistance Center is an excellent resource for business owners or potential business owners who need a little help with developing a plan or strategizing their next steps. Consultations are free and workshops have a very small administrative fee.”
