11th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest winners announced

Polk County Public Schools and the Community Relations Advisory Council of the Board of County Commissioners announced the winners of the 11th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay challenge on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the annual MLK Breakfast at the Bartow Civic Center.

This year’s essay contest topic was “What Does the Dream Mean to Me?”  Students wrote about what Dr. King had envisioned or hoped to see and what you can do today to promote or advance his dream.

Polk County, FL -- On Dec. 7, Sheriff Grady Judd, along with Assistant State Attorney, Brad Copley, recognized the winners of the 2011 Drug Prevention Video/Poster Contest.

At the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year, the Polk County Sheriff's Office and the State Attorney's Office (10th Judicial Circuit) sponsored a Drug Prevention Video/Poster Contest within the Polk County public, charter, and private middle/senior high schools.

Mulberry, FL -- If you’re looking for a good murder mystery play to take in this weekend, go see Mulberry High’s “Murder By The Book,” written by Craig Sodaro.  

Performances by the Drama Club will be this Friday, Nov. 18 and Saturday, Nov. 19 in the Mulberry High Auditorium.  

Tickets will be $5, on sale at the theater ticket booth.

Mulberry Drama Advisor Clare Bernier says the play is about what happens when some of the world’s greatest writers get together.  Murder, not surprisingly, is the main plot!

Bartow, FL -- The Polk County Historical Museum Festival of Wreaths is issuing a call for Decorators! This year marks the Polk County Historical Museum's first celebration of the Festival of Wreaths.

The display and sale of hand-decorated wreaths will occur during the holiday season opening with Bartow's "Magic on Main" event, Nov. 18, and closing Dec. 16 at the Polk County Historical Museum located at 100 E. Main St., Bartow.

Huge Arts and Antique show coming to downtown

Bartow, FL -- Find something artsy or maybe antique treasure this week during the 20th Annual Craft Fair in Downtown Bartow.

The fair will take place Nov. 12 in downtown Bartow, around the Old Courthouse.

The Bartow Craft Fair is one of Bartow's most recognized and well attended annual community events with attendance around 15,000.

This year, organizers say they're expecting 100 diverse craft fair vendors, over 100 classic cars, and 80 antique vendors.
