Bartow, Florida -- For those students who have a hard time getting to school events, faculty and staff members at Spessard L. Holland Elementary took Literacy Night to the students.

Polk County Schools says Assistant Principal Tammy Cress came up with the idea as part of her intern program.

The night included fun activities that included storytelling featuring Principal Melody Butler and Bartow Public Library storyteller Linda Chancey who reads books to the kids as they snacked on pizza and cookies.

At the event, each student received literacy bags that included the following items: a book from Scholastic RIF, some FCAT task cards, book marks, information about getting a library card, pencils and additional items to promote literacy.
