Questions raised after Publix sinkhole

Winter Haven, FL -- That massive sinkhole in the parking lot of a Publix shopping plaza opposite Legoland may not have finished growing yet. Engineers remain on the scene, monitoring the situation.

You might think before any major company or developer starts building on a particular piece of property they would thoroughly check it out for the potential of a sinkhole. But while it turns out Florida law mandates some testing, it may not be enough.

Sinkhole opens up in parking lot near Legoland

Winter Haven, Florida -- Winter Haven police say a possible sinkhole has opened up on Cypress Gardens Blvd, in the parking lot of a Publix shopping center. This is right across the street from Legoland.

Police say the hole is about 70 feet wide and 15 feet deep. The parking lot continues to buckle in areas out from the hole. The property owners have contacted geologists to come out and evaluate the hole.

Lakeland couple and their friend remembered fondly

Lakeland, Florida -- Sheriff Grady Judd from the Polk County Sheriff's Office says at 9 p.m. Monday night a 14-year-old girl came home to find her mother shot to death.

When deputies responded to the home at the corner of Old Highway 31 and Cherry Lane in Lakeland, they discovered the bodies of two more people but learned the girl's uncle, David Smith, was gone.

Sheriff Judd said deputies put out a bulletin to be on the lookout for 27-year-old Smith, who was considered a suspect in the murders.

DCF recommends Winter Haven daycare be shut down

Winter Haven, Florida - 10 News is digging deeper on allegations of abuse at a Winter Haven daycare. The complaints are so serious that Florida's Department of Children and Families wants to revoke the facility's license and shut the place down.

Among a number of complaints, workers at the Cypress Oaks School are accused of threatening children and forcing some to go without food as punishment.
