Polk Parkway lane closures to take place throughout this week

Lakeland, Florida - Routine maintenance work and equipment upgrades at various toll plazas will require lane closures and shifts, and suspension of tolls along Polk Parkway next week.

That's according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

Daytime closures begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m., or until the work in each lane is complete. Nighttime work hours are 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. If tolls are suspended, motorists should proceed with caution through a designated open lane.

Students to compete in Polk Scholastic Chess Championship

Polk County, Florida-- In celebration of 25 years of competitive Polk County student chess tournaments, over 450 students from kindergarten to 12th grade will compete in the last and final Championship round of a five-game tournament on Saturday, March 16.  

The students will play other similarly skilled students, and then winners will be given trophies at 4 p.m. after the completion of play.

The championship event will take place at the Highland Park Church of the Nazarene in the Family Ministries Building:  4730 Lakeland Highlands Road, Lakeland, FL 33813. 

Farmworkers march on Publix

Sarasota, Florida -- Over 150 farmworkers will walk 200 miles in two weeks to get the attention of Publix.

On Saturday, March 9th, farmworkers from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) and their consumer allies from across the state will march up 41 to the Publix corporate headquarters in Lakeland. Marchers are calling on the Florida-based grocery giant to honor the breakthrough social responsibility partnership for farm labor reform known as the Fair Food Program.

Lakeland, Florida -- At Polk State College, an academic office is bursting at the seams with clothes. Piles of pants and tiers of ties are all donated to the Polk State Professional Clothes Closet in order to help people.

Free health screen saturday at Lakeland Sam's Club

Lakeland, FL - Area Sam's Clubs will host free allergy and health screenings in the Lakeland area this Saturday, March 9, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The screenings are free and open to the public; members and guests can attend.

The Ides of March brings Tow Jam!

Bartow, Florida -- Main Street Bartow's Friday Fest, also known as "Tow Jam", is back this March 15.

The downtown Bartow block party features live music, vendor booths, children's fun activities, great food, beer and other drinks.

Also included is the Friday Fest Cruise-in Car Show with dash plaque awards for the first entrants.
