Polk Marine among those killed in training exercise

Polk City, Florida -- Friends and family are mourning the loss of a Polk County Marine who was killed in a training accident that also claimed the lives of six other servicemen and injured eight more.

20-year-old David Fenn was killed when a 6mm mortar shell exploded Monday night during mountain warfare training at Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada.

Fenn and the others were part of the 2nd Marine Division, a ground combat force based out of Camp Lejeune, N.C.

TRAFFIC: NB U.S. Hwy 27 reopened

Winter Haven, Florida -- UPDATE: Authorities say northbound U.S. Hwy 27 has been reopened from Cypress Gardens Boulevard to Dundee Road after a multi-vehicle crash caused it's closing earlier.

Driver strikes 7-year-old boarding bus before school

Winter Haven, Florida -- A young child was struck by a mini-van while walking to her school bus Wednesday morning.

According to Polk County Sheriff's deputies, it was around 7:15 a.m. when 7-year-old Vanessa Perez's school bus was stopped at the intersection of Johnson Avenue East and Ellison Parkway in Haines City. 

Witnesses told officials the bus had its stop signal arm and flashing lights deployed as Vanessa and one other child crossed the street to get on board, but a man in a white, Dodge Caravan attempted to pass by anyway.

Cops: Foul play not likely in Polk death investigation

Winter Haven, Florida-- Winter Haven Police have made new developments in an ongoing death investigation.

The investigation began Tuesday morning after a survey crew working along the 900 block of Cypress Gardens Boulevard, the former Solcum Gardens, discovered a man's body in a reported homeless camp.

Annual health rankings study released

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida - The annual County Health Rankings and Roadmaps tool has just been released.

This marks the fourth year for the study, done by the University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It uses data to give a snapshot of people's health in counties in each state.

The study takes into account a variety of factors - including diet, exercise, employment, graduation rates, and obesity rates.

This fun challenge is perfect for everyone – from seasoned triathletes to first-timers. Race a 20-minute swim, 20-minute bike and a 20-minute run in the controlled environment of the Kelly Recreation and Gandy Pool Complexes.  The Indoor Triathlon will be held on Saturday, April 13th, with check-in at 8:00 am at the Kelly Recreation Complex.

You set your own pace. Performance is measured by distance covered in each of the three legs. The more distance you cover, the higher your score.

Polk County gets health rankings


Bartow, Florida -- The fourth annual County Health Rankings & Roadmaps tool was released today with rankings that serve as a snapshot of the health of individuals in counties across the state and nation.

Polk County ranked 30th in health outcomes compared to the other 67 county health departments in Florida.  Health outcomes measure the overall health of our county in terms of low birth rate, premature death rate, and other factors.
