July 4th Celebration, Bartow Style!

Bartow, FL -- It's gonna be a great Independence Day in Bartow!

This year's 4th of July Celebration promises to be a fun day for families and friends in the community, and an opportunity to display their patriotism on the 4th of July.

Events take place on Thursday from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m. at Mosaic Park in Bartow.

Here are some of the scheduled events:

Lane closures along Polk Parkway for week of 6/29 - 7/5/2013

Polk County, Florida-- The Florida Department of Transportation wants to make sure Polk County commuters are prepared for lane closures along Polk Parkway starting today, June 30. 

According to their weekly advisory, the miling and resurfacing project between mileposts 8 and 21 is still underway, so as we enter the first week of July, drivers should keep the following in mind:

17-year-old shot in Winter Haven

Winter Haven, Florida -- Winter Haven Police are currently investigating a shooting that resulted in a 17-year-old man being airlifted to the hospital.

On June 29 officers were in the area of the Winter Haven Garden Center where a large crowd was gathered outside after an event at the facility.

As officers approached to disburse the crowd, gunshots were heard. A 17-year-old male was struck in the upper body as he was in the parking lot of the Winter Haven Senior Center, which is directly across from the Garden Center.

Polk County, Florida-- The Polk County Sheriff's Office says the summer heat can be extremely harmful to your furry friends if you leave them in the car!

"A car becomes an oven. Don't leave your pets in your vehicle," they warn.

Lakeland Police Department to be assessed for accredidation

Lakeland Police Department to be assessed for accredidation

Lakeland, Florida-- The Lakeland Police Department will soon welcome a team of assessors from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accredidation (CFA) to see if they meet nearly 90 standards necessary for "comparative compliance accredited status", Chief Lisa Womack announced Friday. 

According to the chief, the team is set to start the process, which includes an overall inspection of LPD's policies & procedures, management, operations and support services, on July 10th. 

Man sentenced to 30 years for child porn possession

Lakeland, Florida -- A 73-year-old Lakeland man will possibly spend the rest of his life behind state prison bars after he was found guilty of 16 counts of child porn possession.

On Thursday, July 27, Allen Robert Roth received his 30-year prison sentence.

Polk County, Florida-- During the summer, many people crowd the beaches and pools to cool off and have a good time, but Polk County's Health Department wants to remind residents of the risk of drowning, and encourage safe ways to beat the heat in the water.

Polk County Fire Rescue Division reps say it’s imperative to teach and learn water-related injury prevention techniques, and even more so for young children, who make up more than one-in-five victims of fatal drowning incidents.
