Havendale Blvd reopens after two-vehicle crash

Auburndale, Florida -- Auburndale Police officers have reopened all of Havendale Boulevard between 42nd Street and Jersey Road after an investigation into a traffic crash involving two vehicles.

Police say a 2002 Chevy Blazer driven by 78-year-old Elizabeth Welch was leaving the BB&T Bank parking lot when it pulled into the path of a 2007 Ford Fusion. Welch was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and was thrown from the SUV through the driver's side window.

Teacher arrested for child porn described as "popular and respected"

Bartow, Florida -- A popular Polk County teacher arrested on child pornography has many still shaking their heads asking why and are there more charges possible?

A Polk County judge set Lawrence Douglas Hughes' bond Friday afternoon at 100,000 -- $5,000 for each one of 20 counts of child pornography.

Bartow, Florida -- Bats get a bad rap, but the truth is, they're an important part of our environment.

So on Wednesday, the Bartow Public Library's Super Summer Show is giving kids an opportunity to get up close with bats and learn more about them with a presentation by the Florida Bat Conservancy.

The class is designed for school-aged children 6-years-old and up. Children under 6 are also welcome to attend, but library satff requests they sit "quietly and still" with an adult.

Mom: Son reported teacher with child porn years ago

Bartow, Florida- Last Thursday, Polk Sheriff Grady Judd announced the arrest of 59-year-old middle school teacher Lawrence Hughes.

"We know this is a bad, bad school teacher," said Sheriff Judd during a news conference with members of the media.

Investigators say they later found more than 20 child porn images on two of the teacher's school issued computers at Bartow's Union Academy.

Polk County mayors to meet for 3rd annual Mayors Roundtable

It's all part of the latest undercover Internet sting where Polk deputies pose as teenagers, and this one had some disturbing results. It's not just the people who were busted, but what some had brought with them at the time of their arrests.
